Windows 95 Start button does not respond

    Locked

    by garytn9988 ·

    Problem:
After updating a Compaq Pentium II Armada M300 with I.E. 5.5, the Start button does not respond. I can right click on the start button and get to the applications. I have already attempted to reload I.E 5.5 but reloading I.E did not resolve the problem.

Also when trying to change the view options I get an error that states something like “this is restricted contact your administrator”.

What registry key can I look at and what value should it be to re-enable the start button? Thanks

    Gary

Sounds like you are running on a network drive? disable network drive.

Rather than poke around the registry, why not just reinstall windows 95. This can be done by using your “windows 95” cd…not a restore cd…Do not format!! Just install “windows 95 cd” ..it will fix your problem and you will not loose your data..

WE have workstation images that we use to reload a workstation. I have already done this which does resolve the issue but as soon as I reapply the I.E 5.5 upgrade, the comes back.

      Hi!

Before you install the IE5.5. Did you update your Win 95 first?

You see that all these 16 bit and 32 bit programs or applications do crank up the Operating system here and there. For Win 95, you have quite a number of patches.

Go to http://www.windows.com and get your system updated with the necessary files before attempting the installation of IE 5.5. That should help as IE 5.5 may contain some files that would affect the 16 bit system. The problem may not lie on the machine or the IE 5.5 but on the Win 95 OS

      Try it!

      Regards,

      Sagacious

access the registry and delete all the keys labelled “Profiles”. and there are 3 ways to access the start button. Press CTRL+ESC or press the picture of the windows logo or click the left button on the start button.
