Windows 95 TCP/IP won't work

By Blinkr ·
Windows 95 PC that the TCP/IP got hosed & now can not get it to work after many uninstalls & reinstalls. Winipcfg displays "can not read IP configuration" & installing winsock 2 upgrade I get a message that I need to run the ws2bakup.bat to reinstall old components. After running this & trying to reinstall winsock 2 I get the same message. Everything claims that the TCP/IP isn't configured. I have checked, rechecked, & double-rechecked the settings with those on a 2nd partition on the same PC that is working perfectly. I have even copied over some of the files (ie. wsock32.dll, winsock.dll, wsock32n.dll, etc.) with no luck there either. I have also removed all of the network components & DUN & reinstalled them as well as updated any drivers for the nic. Still no joy!!

Any other suggestions???

No, same nic! I am using this same nic on this machine on a 2nd partition with same configuraion & OS. It works fine. I can also use NETBEUI to access files & printers on other PC's on network. This system was working fine before the TCP/IP got hosed!!
Thanks anyway!!

Removeing the stack after intsalling the winsock2 can be a pain. How I do it is to run the ws2bakup from a windows prompt. You may get some file sharing messages, just ignore them. Reboot into a dos mode and run the ws2bakup again. THe only thing that shouldn't run is that reg entry in the end of it. I do this to take care of the files that were not copied because of hte sharing violations.

After rebooting, remove the TCP/IP stack and again reboot. Before reinstalling the stack, I rename the wshtcp.vxd file. This seems to force a copy from the Cabs. I then readd the TCP/IP stack, and if prompted overwriting newer files.

You may also want to look for extra versions of winsock.dll. Even though you said you replace the wsock32.dll file, this is still dependent on the winsock and multiple ones will still give you headaches with a 32 bit connector like DUN.

Good luck to you

Mark

Greetings,

Make sure NetBUEI and IPX/SPX are removed. Use only TCP/IP protocol.

Something to try.

Boot to safe mode and remove all network adapters. shutdown and open your computer. remove the nic. boot up normally, verify that the nic is gone from control panel --> network. shutdown. reinsert the nic and restart the computer. install upon detection and you should be fine. if not, then backup all data, boot to a boot floppy and format this drive and then start all over.
