Windows 95 will not boot after virus

By carlaanderson2001 ·
My sister was deleting unneeded AOL software and after shuting down and rebooting she was no longer able to bring up windows 95. I ran the scandisk and got a message that the "Monkey B" was detected and cleaned. I tried restarting using the "Startup" and "Emergency" disk but was unsuccesful. Her system is a second-hand system acquired upon the death of a loved one so there is no "95" CD to accompany the computer. I own one so I tried using it but because is asking for a system disk and runing in DOS the drive was undetected. Is this system a total lost or is there someway to recover it as well as the information stored on it?

You should first of all get a copy of a virus utility to ensure that the system is clean. Scandisk doesn't detect and clean viruses generally, so you may still have an infected system.

Once you are sure the system is clena, you can try reinstalling Windows over the existing install. It should fix the install while keeping all the old software and settings intact.

I recommend getting a backup of the system, if possible, first so that you can restore and try any other suggestions you get. If the reinstall doesn't work, you'll have to start from scratch.

the first answer is correct, but get a win98 boot disk you can download it off the internet. because it sounds like your computer will not see the cd drive and the win98 boot disk will find most cd drives and let you load from it.

The Monkey.B is a boot-sector virus. You will need to create a boot disk that runs the Monkey.B cleaning utility. As I recall this is a persistent virus; you may need to run the clean process a couple of times once you have setup the proper bootdisk with scan /clean utility.

If the above fails, then yes, you should create a Win95 boot disk and run fdisk, delete all partitions and recreate partitions and reformat. Before doing this, you should backup any needed data files. Check all files that you re-load to the system once it is clean... you don't want to be re-infected again.

Hello Carla,
Build a boot disk, make sure it copied the sys.com, write protect your floppy.
restart your pc from the floppy, then type:
SYS c:
it should be able to make your c: bottable again.
restart the pc.
Sometimes people copy the softwareon the hard disk, so let's look for it.
From the c: prompt type:
dir *.cab /s /p
it should give you the path where the installation files were copied.
then just go to that location and install windows from there, make sure that it installs windows into the same folder as you had before so it will upgrade it and you won't loose any information.
I hope it helps
@lberto
