    Windows 95 won’t load

    Locked

    by tlefort ·

BIG PROBLEMS!!! I’m running Win95 and it won’t load. At times, it just locks up at the Win95 logo after it says “Starting Windows 95”. Other times it will get all the way to error detection and prompting me to load in Safe Mode. I choose Safe Mode and then it locks up again. Since it wouldn’t boot off the system drive, I tried the CD after changing the boot sequence. Then, it failed loading from CD. So I tried booting from a floppy. I was able to get a prompt, but the keyboard was frozen. I couldn’t type anything. I’m out of ideas. Please help!!! A side note that may mean something to someone is that when I went into the BIOS to change the boot sequence, I was checking around and noticed that the system date was set at November 11, 2045!! I corrected it, but am perplexed as to how that happened. I’ve heard of really crazy things happening when the motherboard battery needs replacing. Again, please help!!

well you can try to reset the BIOS back to ‘failsafe’ default values… and see if that works.

If not did any software change, of get installed?

If the BIOS default settings dont work I would try to get the latest BIOS patch and flash it and then set it back to the default values and see if that cleans it up.

Is this system always on? It may be a heat problem.

      good luck

When I turn on the power, the only thing that happens is the power supply fan and the CPU fan go on. All the lights on the front of the box stay on. Nothing else is happening. It’s not that your advice wouldn’t help. I’m just not getting that far. If you have anything further to offer, please do so.

I suspect overheating as well. Especially since you’re not getting any beeps or error messages from hardware or software. Make sure the Power supply fan and CPU fan are running. Leave the cover off and powered down for awhile, then try again.

Either that or your motherboard is totally fried.

Is there a machine similar to yours around that you can test with? If so, pull the hard drive and see if you can boot to safe mode easily. Don’t let it boot normaly or Win95 will try to install any device that would be different on this machine. If it works you’ve probably eliminated that as a problem and can look at the motherboard/BIOS.

If you can get to the motherboard manufacturers web site see if you can download a BIOS flash and try it with a backup of your boot disk. While this may bewishfull thinking, it may work.

If that doesn’t work it is probably a bad MB or processor. If you can get the same board and the test with the HD worked, you may not have to reinstall too much.

      Good Luck!

There could be several things wrong so you need to eliminate 1 problem at a time. You did not say when you started having these problems – after what event.
      Try:
remove all other cards except video and see if that works. Do your Windows 95 installand then add one device at time to find out what was the offending device or driver.

If you had problem just with the video and memory do you have another memory module you can try and ensure as stated earlier all the cooling devices are working correctly. One try is just to swap the memory between the slots so that you are making sure they are not slighty unaligned. Also can test if the memory modules work okay on another computer.

Another thing to try is to change the video card, keeping the memory the same (remove all other cards).

You can also try to check the web site for BIOS upgrade – ideally you should do this first!

run scan disk from your boot disk and if possible a virus check (boot sector viruses).

      Good luck,
      Kamal

Call me crazy, but your master boot record might be corrupted (Although I agree with asyscokid about overheat). This will not hurt your computer:
Boot from the w95 boot diskette, see if you can use the keyboard this time and at the prompt run fdisk /mbr.

I also agree with previous answer on reloading the defaults on Bios.

      Good luck!

I don’t think its a heat problem. Things are happening too fast for it to be a heat problem (it has had time to sit and I am assumming he didn’t lose a fan).

I am leaning more towards a virus or a memory failure.

No wonder I’m not a hardware gal. Here’s a work around. I had the same problem… would not boot up, after installing ISA NIC for cable modem. Well,I wanted to get online, so I installed w95 into a second directory. It allowed me to boot up intothe new windows directory (which I named *oldwin*) and work on saving files and what would have been lost data/programs. Don’t install anything, but save everything you can and then .. guess what.. format, reinstall. I’ve been very pleased with mynew installation.. lots more hd space and fewer system errors. hope this helps.

Your display driver would do this… go into safe mode – choose to not load all windows drivers. change your display to the generic driver and put it in vga mode.

To see if Explorer is the problem, try this:

Hit F8 on startup, and choose Command Prompt. Type edit c:\windows\system.ini Under
      [boot] Change
      shell=;Explorer.exe
      shell=progman.exe

If Program manager loads go to File>Run, type msconfig, goto the Startup tab and uncheck everything. To get to Device manager type control sysdm.cpl in the Run box.

Either go back and change system.ini to the original or if you’re comfortable using File Manager, you can type Winfile under the File>Run and check your configuration files.

Hopefully this will get you back in.

I smell a virus. Boot with a known-virus free boot disk and run a virus scan of the boot sector of your hd. Then, scan the entire hd. This really sounds like a virus to me.

Make a backup on all your importent stuff.
Boot whit a disk, and fdisk your hdd. Reinstall Win95.

Or try to change the I/O.sys file.
Make a bootdisk, (if you don+t have one)
      Type Attrib i/o.sys -h -s -r
      delete the file
copy the I/O.sys from the floppy and reboot.

      It may help.
      good luck…

Heat is one of the number one issues for lockups. I have a feeling that that is not it. If it locks up in safe mode and in normal mode at the loading windows 95 screen it is most likely a drive issue. Have you updated and firmware of drivers recently? The bios date is due to a bios that may not be fully y2k complaint. I ran across several motherboards that were not y2k compliant that set the date way to far in the future. I would check for a new bios update from your motherboards manufacturer. This can usually be found on the actual PC board its self. If you cant get a dios update you might find yourself buying a new motherboard

I’m sure one (or more) of the above is the answer. Variation of above. Take the top off, and look to see if the fan has not fallen off!, or is connected to the power supply.
If not, there we are looking for something silly. Things to check: How much RAM is reported during boot up (Does the amount vary). Is Post reporting the correct processor speed (Try under-cooking the CPU for a while).

All those previous answers would be a great place to start if you could get your PC to even begin to load the windows drivers, but it won’t. I would look seriously into the hardware now. Are you getting any beep codes when you power on the PC? Take it to your local PC repair shop and have them change out the BIOS chip and the CPU one at a time to isolate the failed component.(if they find it you buy the part, otherwise you don’t) If you get beep codes then you are looking at a bad motherboard or improperly seated card or memory simm.

Take EVERYTHING OUT of the PC except CPU, memory, and video card. Turn it on. If you still get no response, time to look at a new motherboard, or CPU.. do the lights on the keyboard flash when you power it on? if so, it is probably not the CPU. Check the voltage selector on the power supply, is it set to 110/115? or did it get bumped to 220/230? try setting it to 220/230 and back to 110/115. Still nothing? Then replace the motherboard. Still nothing, get a new computer.. =)
