Can a hard-disk that has been partitioned with partition magic into two partitions be used with windows 98 (fat 32) on one partition and then windows XP (ntfs) on the other partition. Both on the same hard drive or do they have to both be fat 32 file system.

This is actually the best (IMHO) way to do it. Go to http://www.xosl.org and download their free boot manager.

Dual Booting Win 98 and XP on the same hard drive is possible, some precautions is that they be installed in the same directory.
If the operating systems are not to share files then you can use the file syetm setup as listed,if you want to accessthe files on the 98 partition from XP then you will need to use the Fat32,when installing XP on the other partition select to do a clean install

You can run xp and 98 on the same hard drive. I would install the 98 first then the xp. the only thing you have to watch is with 98 it tries to take over i know that with 2000 you have to install in first then 98.
Good luck-

The simple answer, is yes.
The caveat is that Windows 98 will NOT be able to access any data or files on the XP NTSF partition.
Personally, I would set up 3 partitions.
1 FAT32 for 98
1 NTSF for XP
1 FAT32 for shared data files.Chas

EASY ANSWER,
One partition!!!!
Format the HDD to one partition (or more if you feel like it will help…it wont). Install win98 completely and make sure all the key=notes are in their respected locations(good install) then insert the xp disk. It will ask you if you want to upgrade the older OS, say no but install it anyway.
Make sure to answere the questions about ntfs, and fat to answer FAT.
When it is finished and you reboot it will give you 30 seconds to select which os you want to boot.
And unless you want to change the order or the time limit to which you have to select the os, you are done.
no extra downloads, no partition majic, just microsoft majic.

To answer your question. Yes.
Note: windows 98 has to be on the first partition.
To the computer the partitions are separate drives.
When you install XP to the second partition XP should provide you with a boot menu on start up.
You will have to install all applications to both OS’s.
Xp will be able to see the fat32 partition. Windows 98 will not be able to see the ntfs partition.
