Windows 98 2ndEd. GONE BAD!!!

I just recently installed win 98 SE on my laptop. I have a Compaq Presario 1681, 233 MHz Intel Pentium processor with MMX technology. After I installed Win98, my touch pad quit working and when my computer boots up it reads “301-Keyboard Error”. after pressing F1 to continue the boot win98 finally loads, but the display settings are completely messed up and I cant seem to get them set back to what they were. Everytime I load the drivers it erases them after I restart the computer. Do you have any suggestions on how I can fix these problems with my labtop? any advice would be appreciated.,
