Windows 98 booting problem

Hi,
When I boot my windows98 computer as its going through the post, as soon as it sees the drive(primary master) a message appears that says the following and freezes: Initializing Plug and Play Cards……..Card-01 PnP Sound Chip.
I tried removing the card but get the same answer.I cannot get past this error to do anything else.I could only get in to cmos.
Any help would be appreciated…
