Windows 98 booting problem

By kashmeir63 ·
Hi,
When I boot my windows98 computer as its going through the post, as soon as it sees the drive(primary master) a message appears that says the following and freezes: Initializing Plug and Play Cards........Card-01 PnP Sound Chip.
I tried removing the card but get the same answer.I cannot get past this error to do anything else.I could only get in to cmos.
Any help would be appreciated...

Have you tried booting into "safe mode" or "Command Prompt only"....or even using a boot disk? If you can get in using safe mode, make sure to delete the software for the Sound Card in question. If you can't boot in safe mode (a sure sign the problem is more than software/drivers), you need to begin a methodical test of the hardware. Remove non-essential components and see if the system comes up. Use BIOS default settings. Get the system as "vanilla" as you can and try to get it to boot successfully. Once you do, you can begin reinstalling and reconfiguring.

If you give me some more specifics, I'll be glad to help you further.

Good Luck!

From the message, I don't think your able to get to f8, safe mode, or boot disk..only BIOS/CMOS setup. I would try going into BIOS setup, and playing with PCI configuration, if it's set to automatic, try setting to manual. Do you have an integrated sound chip as well as the removable card? disable on-board sound if so. Try resetting system defaults. set specifics for IDE, not auto detect, or vice-versa. try the reset configuration option. turn off plug-n-play O/S. Lots of stuff you can play with, you may want to write down all existing setting before you start making changes. If I knew more about the BIOS version, I could be more specific. Also, look for an updated flash on the BIOS, this very often solves problems. Hope it helps!

I understood that you tried moving a card but did you take note of the original CMOS settings and reset the CMOS to factory settings.
