Windows 98 bootup

By rkussatz ·
I am not able to boot up past the win 98 screen. Error msg. is general failure reading drive c. I choose retry/fail I get the option to boot to safe mode. So I chose safe mode, looks like windows is booting up again then I get an error message following file is missing/corrupted c:\windows\command. There is an error in your config.sys file on line 3.I have copied a good config.sys from the boot disk to c drive. Is my hard drive toast?

It is hard to tell at that point if your hard drive is having general hardware failures. Do you happen to have any Hard Drive Diagnostics tools that you can boot up with and run? Even if you are unable to complete a normal DOS style scandisk, thatmay be an indication that your hard drive is failing.

Is there another Windows98 machine that is like yours, that you can get the command.com file from? Generally, Windows98 does not need an Autoexec.bat or a Config.sys file to boot up safely. Hope you figure it out either way. Good luck.

So check the virus at MBR you may have boot virus. If it is clear of the virus then try using fdisk /mbr option to overwrite your boot files using WIN 98 Startup disk
