Windows 98 Clients cannot see printers

By melali ·
We currently have a Windows 2000 Cluster server running on our network. One of the nodes is File and print and the other node is for DHCP,WINS and Exchange. The problem that I am having is that windows 98 clients are not able to see all printers in the Print Server. There are currently 8 printers on the network and the windows 98 clients only see 3 of the printers. Windows 2000 and XP clients are fine and are able to connect with no problems.

Windows 98 Clients cannot see printers

windows 98 will only be able to see those printers if the windows 98 machines log into the nt domain with a username and password. see the configuration of the microsoft client in the networking icon in the controle panel. (plus they will need to have accounts in the active directory or user accounts in the main server) if this is not done, if you only set up these machines to be part of a workgroup only, they will never be able to see those printers.

The win98 clients probably only see the printers whos names are shorter.. i cant remember if it's an 8 character limit, or a 14 character limit.. Try renaming one of the printers that win98 cant see, and see if that works.. if it does, either renamethe printer, or create another duplicate printer with a shorter name.
