Windows 98 Defrag will not work

Would a firewall stop maintence from working?
I downloaded NeoWatch (great Stuff) but now my defrag is running wild going nowhere. it ran all night and did nothing. How do I fix this?

  If NeoWatch is running, or any other program for that matter, defrag will not continue.

  Start your win98 in Safe mode and run defrag. It’ll work.

  Hit control+alt+delete and close everything but explorer and systray. Turn off any screen savers and power management. If that doesn’t work, run defrag in safe mode as the person in answer 2 suggests.

  after cutting everything off try running scandisk with fix errors box checked to clear up any errors on drive. then run defrag with the error checking off.this is recommended for slower machines that dont have alot of resources.

  Simple answer: Yes it can, BlackIce defender causes exactly the same problem !!

    You should also find it screws scandisk (which is basically what defrag does first anyway)
    Turning of check for errors won’t help because the actually defrag, as well as the error check, restarts when the disc is written.

  Clicking once on the “START” button and leaving the menu up will normally pause any applications that are interring with scandisk or defrag but I am not positive about logging functions of a software firewall. Try getting a real firewall or NAT Router which will give you much better protection and remove that overhead. (unless you log to that machine)
  
  The linksys and dlink cable/dsl routers are great for the HAN.
