Windows 98 Explorer

Recently when right clicking on windows 98 explorer (as is trying to view properties or delete) the screen goes black. It then shows numerous vertical flashing color bars on the right half. The 'Esc' Key returns the screen to the desktop but generally somne icons are removed from the task bar.
Reinstalling a backup of windows explorer has no effect. What should I look for, and can I download the explorer file?

Start with System File Checker.

Insert your W98 CD, and exit the Setup Program.

From the run box on the start menu, run sfc.

If you still have problems, you may need to run a registry cleaner such as
Norton WinDoctor
or V-Com Fix-It

Many viruses have protection mechanisms in them to prevent you from viewing properties or deleting them.
This sounds like you just hit one.
Update the DAT files of your antivirus scanner and check the PC.
