Windows 98 hard drive

By kashmeir63 ·
Hi,
I have a windows 98 computer that was unable to bootup....I tried a few things and tried hooking it up as a slave and I was able to see the data on the hard drive.I tried the drive on a different computer and the first few times it booted up fine. After a few times I was unable to boot it back up.Tried putting the old drive back and I was unable to bootup.Tried the drive in question on another computer same thing, okay 1st few times than unable to boot it backup, and the old drive does not work. Can a bad hard drive be killing the system..There was norton antivirus on it and up to date...Any help would be appreciated.

Try booting from an MS-DOS disk or Win98 startup disk. Run scandisk and make sure you run a surface scan to see if you have any Bad Sectors. Hope this helps.

If the systems that you had the drive in will not boot at all, not even from a floppy, the drive you have been swapping has a boot sector virus on it.

Of course, it is "remotely" possible that there is a problem with the electronics on the drive that is killing the IDE controller on the motherboards.

If you can boot from a floppy, you may not have a boot sector virus.
To check things out, try a PCI IDE add-on card in one of the bad systems.
If you can boot with the PCI IDE card, then yes, the drive has been blowing the IDE controllers on your systems.
