Windows 98 - IE5.0 shutdown

By d.haspel ·
When trying to shutdown Windows98 with IE 5.0 using the START, SHUTDOWN options, apparently Windows hangs up (explorer fails to respond) unless I do something on the net. I have to hit CTL,ALT,DEL and then END TASK. SFC does not correct problem. Can I download IE 5.5 from www.evolt.org and install it without causing any further problems or is there another solution? I don't have a clean copy of IE 5.0.

Yes, IE 5.5 should work just fine on your system.

However, IE may not be your problem.

Start by checking for a newer version driver for your video card.
Do you have DirectX 9 installed?
If so, does the driver for the video card specifically support DirectX 9?
If the video card driver does not SPECIFICALLY support DirectX 9, I would remove DirectX 9 and drop back to the newest version supported by the video driver.

Next, install the W98 shutdown supplement.

You may need to run a registry cleaner. I prefer the one in Fix-It from V-Com.
