Windows 98 Locks Up Randomnly

By jeffrunnels ·
I have a HP Pavilion 8660C, Pentium III 533 MHz machine running Windows 98 SE. The problem is that it locks up (no mouse or keyboard input) randomly. I thought it was a IE 5.0 problem at first, because it happens frequently when online, but it also locks up in Word, when running games, and just about anytime it feels like it.

What can I do to fix this, or even to determine what it is? Is there anything I can do with HP or Microsoft to make them assist?

Not sure if you have tried this yet:
Start>Programs>Accessories>Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag. In that order. It will take a while, and make sure no screen saver or other program is running (so the computer stays on while these tasks are performed). How much memory do you have? And,you'll get no help out of Microsoft, and little if any from HP on a problem like that.

Have you tried booting the system in 'Safe Mode'??

1.(For WIn98, Hold the 'Ctrl' key during boot-up, select 'Safe Mode'. Win95 use 'F8'). Once it's done booting up.
2. Do a complete 'Shut Down'.
3. Then reboot the system in 'Normal' mode.Booting into 'Safe Mode' usually fixes strange little problems in Win9x machines.

Good Luck..

Check and see how many app's are running in your systray. How much memory do you have? May need to manually change virtual memory settings.

If you already tried the rest of the solution then try this. Normally you would not store anything in the c:\windows\temp directory, if you have usee this directory to store files or program please relocate them. To answer your problem, clear up all files and folder from c:\windows\temp\ you probably don't know but everytime that files or program that you open a copy of it get stored in c:\windows\temp\. The file often get run in the backgroung and will use up memory and cache. This will slow your system down if not freezing it. This should solve your problem unless you have a bad hard drive. Go into that directory once a while and make sure it is empty or close to being empty. Run scandisk and defrag once in awhile as a car word need tune-up once a while.
Good luck,

You are lucky, I have 3 machines that do the same thing. Sent one back to the vender and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Sometimes these problems are caused by Norton Antivirus or some other TRS program or Video drivers, Bios Etc.
