    Windows 98 Logon Issue

    Locked

    by j9 ·

I am working on a system running Windows 98. The problem is that it is not prompting the user for login during boot up. It seems to be loading a default profile of sorts. From the start bar he can “Log Off” and then “Log On” but it is a nuisance.

The “Log Off” is not indicating whom is logged in. The network properties are set as such so that Windows is the default log in.

If anyone knows of the fix for this, please advise.

      1. For multiple users:
In network neighborhood make sure you have the “Microsoft Family Logon” client installed. Also from control panel/passwords make sure user profiles are enabled.
      2. For single user who wants password
Go to c:\windows and delete all files with the .pwl extension and reboot the system. This will prompt you for a username and password when the system starts. If you want a password than type one in, if not, then leave it blank just filling in the username.

I hope I understood your question correctly, good luck…

It sounds like the first time that someone logged in they just hit enter, if you do this, it will automaticaly log into that acount, also try the log on to the domain check box in network neighborhood.

search your registry for AUTOLOGIN. This is a key in your registry that logs you in automatically. This is your problem. Just delete the key.

I think it might be located here:
      HKEYLOCAL/software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Network/RealModeNet

Go to find and search for all *.pwl files. Delete all files found and then reboot. What it sounds to me is that whoever logged onto the computer did not place a password in when asked to. If you do not place a password in and you say ok and then ok again and leave the password field blank you will no longer be prompted for your password when logging in, you will boot right into windows.

You indicate that “Windows” is the default, change that to “Microsoft Networking”, and delete all the *.pwl files as suggested earlier. Good Luck

Answer No.3 sounds likely. Lots of OEM machines come with that setting in the registry. just search for autolog and you’ll find it.
