windows 98 modem

I am trying to get internet access from my pc but it keeps giving me the error unable to initialize modem. Windows detects the modem and installs the drivers for it.But it keeps on bringing this error when I try to log onto AOL.

You have to run the setup part of AOL and let it detect the modem. Once it has done that, you should be able to connect to AOL. If it doesn't fix it, download the lastest drivers from the company of your modem, install them, then let AOL redetect the modem.

just becaust it detected and installed doesn't necessarily mean it's working. use phone dialer to see if that works. if it doesn't, then there's a problem with the modem. if it does, then switch ISPs

Click Start>Settings>Control Panel>double-click the System icon go down the list and locate modems, check for exclamation marks to see if the modem is conflicting with your mouse, highlight modem in list and click on the properties click on the resources tab and see if modem is working properly. If modem is conflicting with another port change ports.
make sure that you have the line from wall plugged into correct socket in the back of your computer, then you want to make sure that you have the updated drivers to your modem,it may take a couple of times by deleting the modem and reinstalling

First thing I would do is get the latest drivers for your modem. Before installing the drivers boot your ssytem into Safe Mode. You can do this by tapping the F8 key while booting, this will take you to a Windows 98 Startup Menu there chose option 3Safe Mode. Then go into System Properies>>Device Manager and remove your modem and COM Ports. Then go to START>>RUN and type in msconfig, this will bring up System Configuration Utility. Go to the Startup TAB and uncheck everything except systray and scanregistry. Click Apply and then OK and restart. Once you modem installs test it by going to hypertermianl and chose the AT&T and see if it connects
