Windows 98 - Not Responding Apps

By IQorEQ ·
My friend runs Windows 98 and often has problem to open applications. His PC shows error messages within Task Manager, (Not Responding). I found his system comes with 128MB RAM, P III-500Mhz, HD space left is 300MB without Virtual Memory set.

Does anyone have idea, please let me know so that I can give him a hand? Thanks in advance.

Windows 98 - Not Responding Apps

Your friend should always have virtual memory setup. If Windows runs out of RAM it will use the virtual memory. 128M of RAM should be plenty, but it depends on what he is running.

Not Responding, will show up any time that there is a delay. If he waited longer, the Not Responding might have gone away. Since he is not using virtual memory, all processing must be done in the RAM, (no where to swap it out to). The long and short of it is to set up the virtual memory. You should set it to double the amount of RAM plus 12M. Which means in your friend's case, that he needs a larger harddrive, (probably why he disabled the virtual memory to begin with).

Thanks Christner.

I deleted some of his unused APPz, freed up some space and re-config more Virtual Memory. It works better.
However, I would like to know how to arrange APPz running in order within time relay at start up so that I can config his PC in better way.

Somthing else to do would be to run MSCONFIG and under startup uncheck anything he doesn't need runnung. This will free up some memory.

Open System Information under the Programs, Accessories,System tools folder.
Go to the Tools menu and select System file checker, this will detect if windows has any missing or corrupt files, it will restore them from the CD. If that doesn't help go to the System configuration Utility also located on the Tools menu. Check the startup and *.sys files to see if any unneccesary apps are running in the background that might be conflicting or taking up resources.
