Windows 98/Office 97 freezing

By Mozster ·
We have a Toshiba Tecra 8200 laptop running Win 98 and Office 97.
If you're in say Excel 97, choose File Open and then click the drop down menu for "Look In" the laptop freezes up with the only way out being a hard poweroff/on.

This is happening regardless of if you're logged onto the network or not. So even Windows running in local mode gives the problem when the look in drop down is chosen.
I've tested in Word 97 and the same problem occurs. Windows Explorer locks up when started as well so I think it could be a Windows based fault rather than Office.

Any ideas?

Sounds like falky code hanging the processor or bad RAM.

I would advise removing Office 97 and then doing a re-install. If the issue is resolved, it was corrupted code.

If not, check the RAM.

If Windows Explorer is locking the thing up I would be looking at backing up all the data and wiping the drive and doing a clean install of both Windows 98 and Office 97.

I would suggest that before you do anything, perform all Windows and Office updates. If this does not fix the problem, then follow the other advice. Also, have you checked for Spyware? Look in the Add/Remove programs to see if you have any unwanted software.

Windows update and a forced update to IE6 has fixed the problem.
Also looked like McAfee Viruscan was locking the USB floppy disk drive up when browsing drives and shares.
