WINDOWS 98 - SCANDISK PROBLEM ON HDD

By Mozster ·
I have a user with a laptop with Win'98 installed.
Intermittenly when he boots it up it will run Scandisk and stall for ages at 9% when its checking the file system.
Eventually it passes this area but doesn't offer any options to fix the problem.
I've tried running Scandisk once Windows is loaded and getting it to do a "Thorough" scan but it didn't find any errors or bad clusters on the drive. It will however stall at 9% through the process as before.

Is there any way round this Scandisk problem on startup?
Thanks!

Look like the hard drive might be crapping out. You should start backing up any important stuff that you might need on that laptop. anyways, here's what you need to do to disable the autoscandisk at startup:

open the msdos.sys file with notepad, look for "AutoScan" and change the value to 0.
