Windows 98 se Domain Logon missing

By cyndikoz ·
HELP!! I am trying to add a Windows 98se machine to an existing network. I get no Logon box at start up but if I want to shut down I do get a Logoff command which in turn will give me the Logon Dialogue box. I have already tried the fix from Microsoft "Q14185" which gives regedit corrections. I was able to use the registry to display a Logon Confirmation but this is not the fix I'm looking for. Anyone else run across this?

Windows 98 se Domain Logon missing

This means that your computer is autologging in.

Use the regedit program and search for

autologon

Delete that key from the registry.

Your computer should boot up to the login dialog box after that.

It's not autologging. The network is not accesible (though I can get to the internet)until the log off & log on steps are completed. At that point I can see the network.

Read about "force users to logon":

And also verify if your primary logon is Microsoft Network client.

The Log on box does not appear at start up. It loads directly to the desktop until I logoff and logon. This tip will help for other instances though

I understand your issue but this tip is possible correcting your problem because when is applied you can't have access to desktop without a valid logon box (name and password).

The laptop has "gone home for the summer" (I work in a school system. Will give it a shot in Sept. Seems to make logical sense.

Windows 98 se Domain Logon missing

Assuming (of course) that you have the Microsoft Client installed, set up as your primary network Logon, and set it to Log on to Windows NT Domain under properties, I'd do two things:

1) I'd set it to not log into an NT Domain, then log off and reboot. Then I'd go back and re-enter the domain logon info carefully re-typing the domain name. I've seen some odd things happen here - don't know if it was an invisible character, corruption of data or what...but this *has* worked for me in the past.

2) I'd strip out the network clients and protocols and reboot. Then I'd completely reinstall networking on the machine. This is a "scattergun" approach, but it will make sure that you aren't missing anything, and is likely to fix anything corrupted. I'd use the newest versions of drivers, etc also...just to be sure.

Good Luck...hope this helps.

Have already tried retyping the domain etc. but I will try stripping all the set protocols a.s.a.p. Hoping for the best.
