Windows 98 SE Lockup?

By ldregely ·
Is it possible that windows 98 se can cause my system to lock up while in any program anytime? I can't even do Ctrl-Alt-Del. Total freeze. Shut off and power back on is what I have to do. It can happen 10min or 1 hour later. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You probably have one program that is corrupting your system. And you proably use this corrupting program every 10 min or 1 hour without realizing it.
Best, and long way to test it out is to hit C-A-D and End Task on one program at a time and let it run that way for, say, a half day. When you find a period of no corruption, Bingo. Of course leave Explorer and Systray intacked. Good Luck

I have a K6-2 500 machine that did the same thing. Tried stopping all services; etc. Turned out that the problem was processor overheating. Pulled the heat sink off of the processor and put a dab of heatsink compound between the heatsink and the processor and put it all back together. Have had no problems since then (5 months). Good luck.

You may want to change the power settings in your control panel so the hard drives and monitor are set to never turn off and also try running your system without active desktop. I have had similar problems and this seemed to correct them.

I would recomend using MSCONFIG (start - run- msconfig)go to Startup tab and unselect suspected (if you have on) program. Restart PC and see if it happens again. If you do not suspect any particular program - just disable one program at a time.
Hope it helps.

Most probably it is a Hardware problem . Could be RAM , Harddisk , Processor etc . I think you should check the bios for the following .
1) Incorrect processor speed
2) Incorrect PCI Clock settings
3) Incorrect Harddisk Mode

Could be a faulty harddisk , Ram , Bios battery , CPU fan , powersupply etc Try to issolate the part that is causing the problem by removing all cards and add ons and see if the same problem occurs in the basic system . Some times Abrupt temperature changes can cause the harddisks to malfunction .
