WINDOWS 98 SYSTEM START-UP ERRORS

by TheChas In reply to WINDOWS 98 SYSTEM START-U ...

I believe that the easiest way to take care of this problem is going to be to re-install Windows 98 on top of itself.

You need a startup floppy disk
and your W98 CD.
DO NOT USE A RESTORE DISK!!!
Use only a true W98 CD.

Set your boot sequence as needed in BIOS settings to boot from the floppy.

Answer yes to install CD-ROM support.

At the DOS prompt, run setup
Follow the prompts for a custom setup, and be sure to have setup use the same folder as your existing installation.
(C:\Windows)

You may loose some settings, and need to re-install a few Windows updates, but you should not loose any files.

As soon as the system is running, back up those precious critical files.

You can try removing this hard-disk and plugging it as secondary into any other PC that you can, and access all your data and back-it-up. Then you can go ahead and reinstall the OS, since you never know what all gets wiped-off while reinstalling.
Best of luck.

You can even reinstall Windows to a different directory, called Windows2 and you will then be able to access all the data in the previous Windows directory. I have had this happen to me before and my greatest fear was loosing all my data but in the end it all worked out. Bonne Chance

s part of Norton SystemWorks there is the one- button checkup program. This tests the whole PC and gives you the results in error messages. Also it asks you if you want those to be corrected. If you say YES, you run the risk of loosing some registry entries and files , but at least the system will run. Of course it has also its limits. But I use it often and am quite happy with it. I hope your daughter will smile afterwards. Good luck from the light town of Paris in France.

WHEN PROBLEM FIRST OCCURED, SCANREG.EXE WAS SUGGESTED. I RAN IT & NO PROBLEMS WERE FOUND. I THEN RESTARTED THE PC. WHEN IT CAME BACK UP THE WIN98 WELCOME SCREEN CAME UP & THAT IS WHERE IT STOPS.THE PC RUNS IN LOWER MEM. BECAUSE HIMEM HAS PROBLEMS. IF SCANDISK IS RUN, IT LEAVES SEVERAL CHK FILES. I TRIED TO REINSTALL WIN98 BUT THE PC DOESN'T RECOGNIZE CD/ROM WHEN BOOTED WTH STARTUP DSK.

Boot from a Win98 diskette and run chkdsk/scandisk.

Resolve any errors there.

Can you Boot into SafeMode? *uhh. I'm an idiot and can't read. Sorry, see that you can only go to safe mode command*

If you can it's probably just some file corruption and you may be able to just replace those 3 files.

I would also try a Virus boot disk as well and scan the MBR, etc for virii.

After that, you may have to use "sys C:" to put some of the new system files on your root drive.

1..reboot your pc..and thenn press F8...and choose command promt only. after that u just type 'SCANREG'.windows will automatically make a backing up your data.
2..if that there is no respon to your pc..just put your windows start-up disk and then... a > rename your command.sys to another name...and then copy your new command.sys to c b > do the samething to himem.sys and make sure u rename it's first.
after that do the first step (1) ....just reboot and press F8 and choose Command Promt Only...and type scanreg...

if there is no respon..i think u should make backup your file and format your hard disk..
