Windows 98 will not boot

By trclerk2 ·
windows 98 will not boot now. It comes up with a black screen that says disk error. When I try to go into Bios to select Safe Mode, it comes up with the same error. This happened when I was trying to uninstall Windows XP, and someone told me to go into the setup and change the Bootup Sequence from C to A. But now I don't know how to change it back. Could this be my booting problem? Thanks

If XP overwrote the master boot record you'll need to restore that. The normal method is (if I remember) to boot with a floppy then run "fdisk /mbr".

Full documentation for the command can be found at:

Hope this helps

When you removed XP, you lost the files required to boot from the hard drive.

You need to do a couple of things.

Boot from a W 98 startup disk.

At the DOS prompt, run the command
fdisk /mbr

Then, run the command
sys c:

You should now be able to boot up.
