Windows 98 Will Not Go Into Safe Mode

By Johnbotz ·
My PC works great in "Normal Mode". It has a P2-350 Intel Processor with 128 MB RAM, 2 Hardrives (40GB Maxtor and a 6.4GB WD), 1 CD ROM (Magic Spin 48X) and 1 CD-RW (ACER 6X4X32), Main Video (16MB Diamond Viper 550) and 2 Best Data Voodoo2 cards in dual SLI mode. The problem is the computer will not go into "Safe-Mode". I know how to get into "Safe Mode" it just won't work in safe mode. After hitting F8 and picking "Safe Mode" the information box comes up informing me I'm in "Safe Mode" and I click OK. It continues to boot and all looks fine except the computer is not responding (locked-up).

Reiterating it works fine in "Normal Mode" but not "Safe Mode". Any Clues??????

Even in safe mode some drivers and programs must be loaded (eg. vga video). If a driver that has regesterd itself as a "must load" driver that is dependint on another driver that dosn't load in safe mode, this driver or prog. can cause a lockup. Try removing your Voodoo cards. This may also be due to the HDD not running in an Enhanced mode (due to drivers not being loaded for the controler).

Is this by any chance a Windows upgrade version from a former Windows 95 configured machine? I have found that upgrading drivers for the hardware to the latest Windows 98 versions (if available) can work wonders. As an alternative you can go through and pick the option to select which drivers you want to load and see if you can narrow it down. This can be time consuming but once you have found the drivers causing the problem you will at least know where to go for help.

You're trying to boot into Safe Mode with two video cards??
what happened when you tried the DOS command for it?
did you attempt to boot off of the CD, and choose start computer with CD ROM support and then type it at that prompt?
might be wortha shot..
just out of personal curiousity,, why do you want safe mode so bad?? is it to defrag?
Good Luck,

Since you rejected all those answers, why don't you just close your question?
