windows 98 Will not Start

By Cr@zy@ssM@g!c!@n ·
I have a pentium 133 running with 32 megs and a 20 gig hd. i had initianly windows 95 and decided to upgrade to windows 98. After the installation, i was unable to boot properly into my operation system. I am then prompted to pick a boot method of safe mode, command prompt, etc. If i choose normal windows 98 will not load. It starts the initial sequence but then goes to the windows shutdown screen. It never lets me boot into the os. I shut it down and go through the same routine everytime. can someone help me. The machine worked fine under windows 95 but the upgrade to windows SE.

Hi, since it worked fine with 95 and you are doing an upgrade (not a fresh install), I suspect there may not be enough memory. 32mb is not a lot and 98se has more features than 95, some of which you probably can install. As a temporary trial fix, try booting into safe mode and if the operating system loads, go into add/remove programs and see if you can get rid of games, deskthemes, etc. that are not vital at this time. Keep in mind that by upgrading you are keeping all your original settings, items are trying to start in your start menu (if any, etc.). I hope this helps.

Well first off I have a little problem with the previous answer that stated " go to add/remove programs and see if you can get rid of games, deskthemes, etc. that are not vital at this time"...I don't see how this could help! I really don't think you should go around randomly removing programs just cause your system wont boot!!!! I really think that would not be productive at all!!!!

But anyways on to some hopefully more *helpful* advice. Fist off press F8 when you boot to go into the boot options menu and choose to write the bootlog. Then boot normally and examine the log to see if you can pinpoint where in to boot process things go wrong.

Another idea that has worked for me in the past has been to boot into safe mode, right click on My Computer and click properties. In the device manager, remove a bunch of your devices (I sujest removing the Dispay Adapters, Floppy disk controller, Hard disk controller, Modem, Netowrk adapters, and SCSI controllers, Sound video and game controllers and perhap

oops..got a little long winded there...it cut me off...let me try that last paragraph again :)

In the device manager, remove a bunch of your devices (I sujest removing the Dispay Adapters, Floppy disk controller, Hard disk controller, Modem, Netowrk adapters, and SCSI controllers, Sound video and game controllers and perhapers the system devices) Then reboot (andpray) and try to go into windows normally. By removing the devices windows is forced to re-detect all the hardware again and perhaps if a driver is causing the problem this will help. I have seen the network adapter as the cause of several simularproblems, so if you think removing all the devices a bit much just try first removing the network adapter and reboot...good luck!!

Boot into a dos prompt and edit the system.ini. You want to look for a line that says

display=pnpdrvr.sys

and change it to

display\vga.sys

You'll end up having to reload the video drivers, but this should get you into windows.

Goodluck to you

Mark
