Windows 98 wont load

By leed ·
Well thats not entirly true, Win98 starts up (i get the blue screen with the Windows logo and Windows 98 under it) but then it comes up with the Windows 98 Startup Wizard and asks for my name and CD-Key.

Why is this suddenly coming up, I was using the computer, it was running slow so i restarted it and now i get what i said above.

If i enter the CD-Key and im guessing it will try and install Windows, will i lose everything on the Hard-Drive? And is there any way around this.

Many Thanks

Lee Daniels

This may have been caused by a corrupt registry

Using a Windows 98 startup disk insert in floppy drive and boot computer, when the screen comes up select option to run setup with out cd rom support
This will reload the system files, you also will want to run virus scanner to check for any viruses on computer.

The other option is to backup all important files and proceed to run setup again

DEPENDING ON PROBLEM YOU MAY LOSE A THING. SOME APPLICATION MAY HAVE TO BE REINSTALL. I DO LOTS OF THESE SOFT REINSTALL WITH NO ISSUES.

Hi,

Use your setup diskette to boot into DOS.
Go to the WINDOWS directory (CD \windows), rename the win.com file to something like WINOLD.com.
This will make the reload of windows be an upgrade, rather than a new install, and you shouldn't lose any files or programs (providing they haven't been damaged in some way).

When the pc is booting (right after BIOS but before Win98 splash screen) hit F8 to get the boot menu. Choose command prompt only.

From the command prompt type:

scanregw /restore

This command will load a program that lets you select a historical registry to restore. Perhaps if you restore to an older registry your windows installation can be salvaged.

no you will not loss any data in the HDD. all u have to do is install the OS in another drive.ok
do this.if u have two partition.save all the important douc in another drive.and save it. and when u install the OS it will and must ask u to select the drive u want to install the OS.so install that in that empty drive.this will solve your problem.or else u can alway take back up of all your douc and then install and go that way.
