windows 98

By texasviolet ·
My father will not go further yet from his Windows 98. He seldom uses the internet except for banking and a couple of sites. He had AVG 7.5 until it was no longer useful and AVG does not support 98 any longer. Is there a anti-virus protection site/download/? that would keep his system up to date still? He has a solid HP and is in his 70's, does not want to 'change.' Also- when I convince him to purchase a new pc, is it fairly simple to transfer his files over to the new desktop? Thank you! Ann

For a computer running Windows? 95/98/Me:
486 Processor, 32MB RAM and 100MB of free hard disk space.

You can have the free version, but you do have to register every year.

Free, and open-source, but does not have a resident realtime scanner - you have to initiate scans manually.

Warning about Avast

by Slayer_ In reply to Two.

I tried it on my win 98, 5200 HDD, 10 gig free, 256 RAM, 350 MHZ, to open the control center of it took more then a half hour of processing. Scans were almost hopeless.
All I'm saying is, don't get your hopes up till you try it.

Otherwise, just stick with old AVG and use a firewalled router, and you should be fairly safe. There is vary few Win98 viruses in the wild, there is however a lot of adware and other spyware out there. Spybot S&D, last I checked, still worked on Win95/98.
