Windows 98SE on floppy

By ltfaiivae ·
On my computers I only have a floppy drive. On one of my computers I can't get in because the explorer. exe is missing. I have tried a bootdisk with no luck. Is there any other way for me to try and fix this problem? I was also wondering if I could copy Windows 98 from a CD onto a floppy?

Your best bet is to boot from a "startup" floppy. (The standard W98 startup disk that you can create from add/remove programs works just fine.)
Enable CD support, and re-install Windows.

As to W98 on floppies, no can do.
You would need to breakup the .cab files into floppy sized increments in the correct order.
Then, you would need to re-write the installer to prompt you for the correct floppy.

If you need to load W98 on a PC without a CD drive, there are 2 better options than using floppies.

1. Temporarily install a CD drive onto the system.

2. Temporarily install the hard drive in another system, and copy the Windows CD onto the drive.
I use Windows\options
Then, place the drive back into the target system, boot from the floppy, and run setup from the folder with the Windows files.

Boot your computer from a floppy disk. Then type C: and hit enter. This will place you at the C drive. At the C prompt type CD DOS and hit enter key. This will put you at the C:\DOS prompt. Type copy command.com c:\and hit enter. Set computer backto boot from the C drive, take the diskette from the floppy drive and reboot. Hope this helps.

My suggestion is to copy the file explorer.exe from a good system to a floppy, then install it onto the bad computer under the c:/windows folder. BTW I believe you can copy windows 98 cabs from cd to floppies using a high density format program tobreak the 1.44 barrier (check pricelessware site) Whether or not it would install from floppies, I don't know.
