Windows 98SE will not boot up in windows

By wbahand ·
I have a Window 98 SE system. Install IE 5.5 service patch q316509. System will not load windows or boot to safe mode.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Weeell - You don't have a bunch of options left other than trying to get your data off the drive while it's slved in another system...or...You could try to use Scanreg /restore at the command promt. Hit F8 when the system first boots up and displays "starting windows 98" - this gets you to an option menu and from there you can choose command prompt only. Type in scanreg /retore and it will give you a few previous registry sets to try...maybe one of them will get the system to boot at least into safe mode...Good luck!!

Depending on the Error ( if any ), You might want to try starting up with the Win98 Startup disk, then Transfere the system files over to the original C Drive, at the commmand promt a sys c:
Then try to reboot (after Taking the Floppy Out)
Good luck with it.

I would try to re-install windows on top of your current version. After that I would go ahead and update to IE 6.0 and not use that same service pack you used for 5.5. It could also be a virus problem. Have you checked your machine for viruses lately? If not its time to do so. NORTON 2002 IS A GREAT PROGRAM TO USE. BUT YOU MUST PURCHASE IT!

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU----GET BACK TO ME WIHT SOME MORE INFO.

I agree with Danny. I recently had a similar problem after updating win98, if you reinstall windows 98 overtop your existing install it should leave existing programs intact & it will also ask if you want to back up files so it can be uninstalled. Iwould recommend you do this. also don't forget to run scandisk first.

Thanks to all who responded. I created a windows boot disk, renamed windows to windows.old and reinstalled windows in the new windows 98 directory. I copied all the desktop setting to the new directory. Everythings seem to be okey.
