Windows 9x Screensaver Password

By LRClifford ·
In Win 9x only, is there anyway to delete or crack a password when a user forgets? May be a screensaver supplied by Windows or one a user added. Where is password saved-in registery, ini file, withine screensaver? Use of profiles does not apply here. What is name of a program that can crack password?

Not any program that I know of, but the inelegant way around it is to simply turn off the machine (hard boot). Then when you get back into Windows, you can uncheck the 'Password protected' box and hit ok. Go back into it and re-select the box and specify a new password. Clearing the box the first time and 'Ok'ing until you're out of the property page will remove the password from the system.

Don't know of any program, either, but the password is stored (encrypted) in:
HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSave_Data
and
HKU\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSave_Data
In both cases, set the BINARY VALUE to 00. DON'T COMPLETELY BLANK IT OUT. A binary value of 00 equals 'no password' (been there).

Hope this helps.
