You use the Westeren Digital Testing Utility

Called Data Life Guard to test the HDD for correct function

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=502&sid=2&lang=en

And test the HDD. If it fails the first test remove it from this system fir to another computer and retest. If it fails the second test the drive has gone to Silicon Heaven but if it p[asses the second test the Data Lead, Power Supply of M'Board in the first computer has failed and needs attention.

Well the DOS Version

Goes onto a Boot Disc and you boot off that.

Not sure about the Windows version as I've never bothered attempting to use it as if Windows is badly messed up the results may be too.

Or you can download the Ultimate Boot CD and run the Disc Utility from there though as I personally don't use WD Drives I'm not sure if the WD Utility is on it but it has most of them. The Ultimate Boot CD is available free here, just make sure that you click on the ISO and not the add.
