By princeduderg ·
Ok I restarted my cpu and now it says windows root system32 hal.dll missing please reinstall,I tried using the cd and going to the recovery console and expanding the file from the cd to my c drive but it said I couldn't, any help would be greatly appreciated.

(Please bear with me as I'm forced to access the site from my sidekick so I don't have the appropriate slashes and colons)

The HAL.Dll is the Hardware Abstraction Layer

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to windows boot problems

And is a list of the Hardware of your Computer so that is why you can not copy it from the Install Disc it is unique to that hardware and can not be replaced with anything else. It is built as you install the OS.

You can try a In Place Upgrade Install by following the directions here

Or if you have a valid copy of the HAL.DLL you can copy it to your HDD from the Backup position.

Try This Before a Repair Install

by willcomp In reply to windows boot problems

Boot from an XP CD and enter Recovery Console.

Enter these commands in sequence:

C:> CD..
C:> ATTRIB ?H -S -R C:\boot.ini
C:> del boot.ini
C:> BOOTCFG /Rebuild

Type 'EXIT' in the Windows Recovery Console and confirm to reboot.
