Windows browsing with TCP/IP

I have several NT computers. Some of them are in a domain, some of them are not. The problem is in addressing them when mapping shares.

One computer (outside the domain) is called “server1”. I can ping it either by “server1” or by “server1.cis.buc.com”. When I try to map shares, however, it only works as “server1.cis.buc.com”.

There is another server (inside the domain) that has the opposite problem. The computer name by itself (“server2”) works, but the full name (“server2.cis.buc.com”) does not. I can still ping the server either way.

How does the Windows Explorer deal with mapping network drives using TCP/IP? I need the mapping to all of these machines to work the same way for scripting purposes.
