Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file.

By thunderain ·
After running my AVG antispyware program on Windows XP, I am getting the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file." when I click on most links. For many, I can right click on a file and get the program up that way. How can I fix this?

Try this

1) Locate a restore point in System Restore when Windows was working properly.

2) Try to restore the computer to that restore point using System Restore.

3) Uninstall your AV application.

4) Be advised that System Restore cannot always restore the computer to a restore point. You cannot trust this flawed feature of Windows XP.

5) Consider obtaining an imaging application such as Norton Ghost:

Ghost will create an image of your operating system, settings and files, writing to a firewire external hard drive at 1-2GB/min. It will also restore a corrupted internal hard drive with the same dazzling speed.

6) If you need additional assistance, please post your query in the Questions Forum.
