windows cannot connect to the printer access is denied

    by cclc ·

I am getting this error “windows cannot connect to the printer access is denied” when trying to connect to a shared label printer.
Numerous other PC’s have connected with no issues.
This is a workgroup not a domain btw.
I get the error when the install process is looking for the driver.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Please clarify. What is the exact error message? What make/model printer? What OS (version as well)? What type of computer? New problem or has it been ongoing? Not enough information to offer assistance.

I experienced the same situation half a year ago or so. My thought then was that it was caused by Microsofts then recent security patches for the printers.

My work-around was to tell my wife to put the documents she wanted to print in the Public documents on her laptop, then login into her account on my PC to print on the printer connected to it. She didn’t really like it, but it worked.
The alternative would have been to make the printer accessible via WiFi, which it fully supports, but I didn’t even try to find out how to do that.

      “not a domain”

That’s your clue. In a non-domain setup not only must you have an account on your PC but also on the “server” that has the printer attached to it.

Some IT staff forget about that.

This printer is just shared on a PC, not a server per say.
So your saying that the local user on the PC that is trying to access the shared printer has to be a user on the the PC that is sharing out the printer?

The printer is a Zebra ZP500 Plus

          Since it’s a company network.

I made assumptions about those that run it and basic network permissions.

For non-Windows Server, that is DOMAIN based setups the permissions flow from the Domain server.

For a local share and non-domain, users have to have accounts on each “server.” It’s tough on those new to this and in the past folk might have enabled the GUEST account but due to tighter security that has been disabled for years.

-> Recap. If John needs to use something on another PC, John needs an account there for file and printer access.

Restart the computer or restart the Print Spooler service. To restart the Print Spooler service, follow these steps:

Click Start Start button , type Administrative Tools in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

      Double-click Services.
