Windows Checkdisk utility

Are there any dos based hard drive utilities (preferably free) that work better than checkdisk? I have one hard drive I’m trying to back up but can’t ghost it up to our server without running checkdisk. I ran checkdisk but the hard drive is still having problems when ghost is checking ntfs volume and the ghost server times out.
