Windows Defragmenter not working....

By Norehca ·
Alright, seriously wierd problem. My windows defragmenting utility doesnt work....it starts up and everything but when i hit either anilyze or defragment....it doesnt do anything no matter how many times i hit it! The only thing ive done recently is do a registry cleanup with some utlity called JV powertools, and install windows vista RC1 on another partition. Other than that i have no idea whats going! Please help, anything would be greatly appreciated!

(I have done a virus scan with avast!, and have done spy-ware searches with windows defender, spybot, and ad-aware pro and found nothing)

Would that be JV16 PT?

Then for a first step, undo what it did. Reboot and try again.

It is a VERY powerful registry cleaner, far too powerful, in my opinion, to be used by a novice, it has the potential to do great harm, if you don't know what you are doing.

DO NOT uninstall JV16 (yet)

as it comes with Automatic backup and safety nets (unless you turned them off) and these you need to restore your registry

Solution!

by Norehca In reply to Would that be JV16 PT?

I did some searching and i found an artical on how to fix this problem. It seems its more common than i thought, and can occur from installing 3rd party defragmentation software. Here is what i did:

C:/WINDOWS/INF/DFRG.INF

I right clicked on this file and then click "Install". This corrected the problem right away!

Disk Keeper is evil! Blew out defrag and your solution saved the day.

Thanks again!

Downloaded & ran Malwarebytes. 10 nasties found including a Trojan. Reboot & all worked fine. check http://www.andreasroom.com/blog/archive/2004/01/18/defrag.aspx this also gives advice.
