Norton’s Ghost or Acronis True Image are both the top commercial offerings that most people use and Clonzilla is the most widely used free offering.

      Acronis

Another tech friend of mine turned me on to Acronis a couple of years ago and I have never looked back. Easy to use and FAST!! I’ve re-imaged my partitions on more than a half a dozen occasions without fail. I’ve also used the boot CD (optional) to get the image to load and worked perfectly. I only take a manual snapshots of my system images every couple few months but there is a customizable “automatic” interval setting.

Of course i’m always wondering about freeware and now that I know about clonezilla, might just have to test it.

If you have one of these hard drive brands you can download a free brand-specific version of Acronis from the manufacturers’s website.

DriveImage XML has worked great for me and also can be restored from BartPC or Hiren’s Boot CD using a plug in…

I’ve used the free and pro versions for backups. The restores from each have worked for both crashes and hard drive upgrades.
