The most popular fix is the Microsoft shutdown supplement avalaible at this link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/wurecommended/s_wufeatured/win98se/ Another cause is if your virus protection is set to scan your floppy disk at shutdown. The file for scanning floppies is larger than the windows shutdown protocol file. If you have Norton Antivirus, right click on the Norton sheild icon down by the time in the right lower corner of your screen. A menu will open. Choose configure Norton antivirus. A windows will open. Click auto protect, then click the advanced. Uncheck scan floppy disk at shutdown. Click ok. If you have Mcafee, right click on the shield in the system tray for Mcafee. Choose properties. Click system scan. Uncheck scan floppies at shutdown. It may be something in your startup as well. You may or may not have used msconfig to troubleshoot this. If you have not and the first two suggestions do not work, click start, run, type msconfig. Click OK. Put the dot in selective startup. Uncheck Load start group items. Then click advanced on that same page. Put a check in disable fast shutdown. Click ok. Then click ok again, and restart. Then restart again. If any of this does not work, repost and we can go from there. Also it may be network drag if you are on a network. There is a patch for that too. Let me know.
