    Windows Domains without Active Directory

    Locked

    by onelap8 ·

Is it possible to set up a PDC with out installing a active directory? We are a small not for profit organization looking to have the domain structure we had under NT with the head aches of active directory.

All servers running 2000 are domain controllers. You do not need to run active directory.

Under Win2K Server (and the new Win2003 Server), the only way to create a domain is to install Active Directory (AD). Any Win2K server can BECOME a Domain Controller (DC), but a DC is not created by merely installing Win2K Server. The same processthat creates an AD domain (running dcpromo), automatically creates the first DC in the domain. Running dcpromo on any other Win2K server in the domain, installs AD and automatically creates an additional DC.

NOTE: There is no PDC/BDC relationship as exists with NT4. The first DC in a domain has some additional unique roles assigned, but otherwise, all DCs are essentially co-equals.

AD rocks and is easier IMO.

Plus, NT is losing any semblence of a secure system quickly. It’s really a step up to go to AD. You’ll get it 🙂
