I have been having trouble getting Microsoft Windows Update to find critical or security updates when it scans my computer. I found a critical update on another site, but when I downloaded it and tried to install it, it said I needed IE5.5SP2, whichis the IE I do have.
Several people at Microsoft support told me that my browser had corrupted files, but finally I got an Microsoft windows person who told me how to solve the problem.
The first 3 people I talked to said it was a problem in my browser. One of them had me email him with my “windows Update.log”, and of course he found that an error 0x80004005, existed in this file when installing began. I don not trust this person, because he is the same one who told me that the critical update I had found could not be installed becuase my IE5.5SP2 had corrupted files, but when someone else in his windows area found a way to install this update, he needed to blame my browser, which he did.
I have no way to confirm what he found, becuase I am enough of a neophyte, that I do not know how to open this file. The file says to “open with which file”. Quite frankly I never have learned to open these files. If someone can tell me how to open this file I would be grateful. Perhaps if I opened the file, the method given me to get other critical update would work for all which did not install according to the “expert” who wants my browser to be “corrupted”.
Any help would be appreciated, because if this error was occuring, I was not being notified of it by my computer when I installed the other updates.
I hope you can make sense of this.
Thanks
