    Windows Error

    Locked

    by johnnynvi ·

    “My computer, 56 K V 90 Modem AMD 3-D K6 processor
    96 MB Ram Windows 98 I’m 66 years old and don’t
know much about my computer, so any help would be
    appreciated.

When it boots up, a window comes up that says ” Cannot find a device
file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application.
The windows registry or system INI file refers to this device file, but
the device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try unistalling the associated
application usingits uninstall or set up program.
If you still want to use the application associated with this device
file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.”
    UNETSUP. VXD
    Press any key to continue.
WHEN I PRESSED A KEY….. the same window comes up again, so I press
another key, and then a window comes up and say’s
    ” WINDOWS NOT WORKING”
X unable to load the Dynamic Link Library
    MSNP 32 dll
The system cannot find the file specified.
Some or all of the following feature is not available.
    MICROSOFT NETWORK

I’m afraid that I will need a detail list on what to do. I don’t know why this error keeps comming
up, the computer seems to be working ok, but of course I’m not sure.
    Thanks, John

      Hi John,
There are a couple of options, but being a newbie I would suggest that you use one of the following options
      Go to http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q166/8/32.asp
This is microsoft knowledgebase you want to reference Q166832
Print this solution out,so that you can have a reference to follow
The obvious option would be to reinstall the operating system, which will take a little time.Hope This Helps

What has happened is that you, or someone tried to setup, or upgrade microsoft network on your computer. Windows is still looking for one or more files that it was told to look for in setting up.

Hit your start button, then run, and type in editsystem.ini

using your arrow keys, browse down until you find a line that references unetsup.vxd. Delete the entire line, then reboot the computer, and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you’re free and clear.

If the problem doesn’t go away, look for the second object, msnp32.dll. Do the same for it.

Again, re-boot. if the problem still persists, at your start, run, prompt, type in msconfig look for any references to MSN or Microsoft Network, and uncheck them.

      Again, reboot.

At the start menu, settings, taskbar, browse to your startup group, and see if MSN or etc is referenced. Delete it.

If all the above fails, then you need to fix your registry, but I’d wait to post detailed instructions until you have tried the above steps.

Let me know if it helps

See the above, but also for the msnp32.dll error, try removing the microsoft client, reboot and add the microsoft client again. If you still get msnp32.dll error then delete/ rename msnp32.dll in the windows/system directory. Try loading it again. If it still fails then it has been my expeience that i have had to reload windows from scratch.
