Windows Explorer

By K.Grass ·
I keep getting entries in my Zone Alarm log that Windows Explorer is trying to access one of the three DNS servers from my ISP on port 53. Also, svchost.exe is doing the same thing only a different port on those same servers. What gives? Anyone have an insight into this annoying behavior? TIA

Port 53 UDP and TCP is used by the DNS service.

Are you running the DNS service from the system having an issue?

It should be safe to allow Explorer routine access.

Svchost is another matter. Allow on a case by case basis depending on what you are doing at the time. Svchost requests may be legitimate or may be associated with virus or adware activity. For more information on svchost, see link below.

Svchost is required for network services and must be allowed access either routinely or on a case-by-case basis.

Personally, I configure Zone Alarm to allow scvhost access. Saves a lot of dialog with Zone Alarm.

The DNS service is run from the router. The machine is virus and adware free but svchost.exe insists on access although it is being blocked by the firewall. Is it possible that svchost needs access to resolve name resolution? Or is my ISP, for lack of a better description, just being a PITA?

Also, the machine belongs to a workgroup here in my office.
