windows explorer crashes while searching

By mrip25 ·
Running Windows XP SP2 on Gateway E-4100 and Dell GX 620. When attempting a file search using the F3 key or the Start Menu, Windows Explorer crashes and generates a report for Microsoft. The exception number is 0xc0000005 and Event Viewer reports a fault bucket number 12710676. Can anyone help? TIA

The 0xC0000005 error code usaully points to memory or power supply problem, start troubleshooting by switching out the memory,to see if this will solve your problem.

Run Anti-Virus to check the system for any viruses before proceeding with the trouble shooting

Fault Buckets are programmers problems, bleeding into plain sight. This can happen if you have installed several of those cheapo search engine enhancers. It is difficult to diagnose which one is at fault, but suffice it to say a thorough cleaning of all spyware, and Explorer Add-On's would help.
