Windows Explorer crashes Win2k pro

Every time I do a fresh boot I try to open windows explorer either by double clicking on my computer or from under the program menu Icon, explorer crashes and refreshes my desktop. At that point I do it again and it works fine. I am using in Win2k pro – service pack 3 -IE60. Does anyone have any ideas? The only thing I can think of doing is a total fresh install of O/S. I would like to avoid this but do I have a Choice? Thanks
