Windows Explorer Locks Up

By JPLconsultant ·
Windows Explorer stops responding, when I right-click, use the menus, or use keyboard shortcuts. The only thing I can do is open windows explorer, left-click to show contents of a drive, and close windows explorer. All else causes it to stop responding. Here's all that I've tried:

1. Degrag/clean up temp files, scandisk
2. Updated/ran antivirus, antispyware, antiadware (ZoneAlarm AV, Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, MS Antispyware).
3. Ran msconfig, stopped all processes from starting and reenabled individually to isolate. Whether all are off, or only any one, or any combination, i still get no fix.
4. Used Shellexview to manage the context menu options via the registry. Whether all are off, or only any one, or any combination, i still get no fix.
5. Deleted all items from Network Neighborhood.
6. Deleted all references to mapped drives
7. Removed all mapped printers
8. Disabled NICs to prevent any attempts at connecting to network resources
9. Disabled the fade and slide effects for menus
10. Ran Windows update (i'm fully updated)
11. Updated all drivers (only had to update a few, but still no fix)
12. I've run a repair via XP Pro CD and reapplied all updates, patches, hotfixes, etc.
13. Using Restore points doesn't resolve the issue, but this issue has occured for quite some time. I don't know which point is before the problem exists.
14. Hard Drive tests don't seem to find anything wrong with the hardware.

I can kill windows explorer from Task Manager, which then automatically restarts (as it should), but I still have the problem of it locking up when i try to windows explorer. I'm getting very good at using CMD, but it's starting to get annoying :)

I get the same results, 100%, whether in Normal Boot with full startup options, Normal Boot with modified startup options (via msconfig) or Safe Mode.

I'm running WinXP Pro. Got plenty HD and RAM space with 1.6GHz CPU. I'm not running low on any system resources.

Nothing I do seems to make this work.

does it do it in Safe Mode?
it sure sounds like spyware or trojan but you didn't mention any found in your scans?
anything in the event log?
with all you have tried, maybe it is hardware. exactly what i/o devices on here? is this a laptop? mouse? usb or ps2? did it come with fancy software and have you updated it recently? or uninstalled it for a test? or removed mouse completely for a test...if usb, how is it connected? hub? powered hub? what other devices on the hub with it. and the keyboard? keyboard? can you try another keyboard and maybe even another port (like, if usb, switch to ps2).

Sgt schultz suggested it might be hardware related. This is a good possibility. Since you have so much time into this already, why not try swapping out the hardrive and reimage it. Don't touch the drive with the problems, but use a different one.

Since you have spent all this time so far their must be something that is very important, or you would have cut your losses and reimaged the drive long ago. OR you do not have an image to fall back to.

For $60 you can by a new hard drive and reinstall your OS, and software. Then hook up the old one as a slave and pull the data off of it.

try a windows XP repair install, that way it will just try to repair the damaged system files.

I assume you have Admin privileges. Create another Admin account to see if you have the same problem with the new account. If the new account works fine, you sound like you have enough experience to shift the old account settings to the new one.

JPL,

Did you ever get this finally resolved? I'm having the same problems myself, on my XP at work and my XP at home. I'm figuring it's some kind of crap I purposely installed.

I tried all the above suggestions, to no avail... though they did provide some good points to fully round-out my troubleshooting. I wound up reformatting/reinstalling. Works like a champ, now.
