windows explorer (NOT internet explorer)

By ohno ·
Whenever I go to Windows Update, it only scans so far, before the error window pops up, saying explorer has caused an invalid page fault(in blah blah module) or a fatal exception has occured. Why? and how can I fix it?

The first 2 things to check are virus and spy-ware scans.

Many mal-ware programs block things like Windows update.

If this is a fresh or new installation of Windows 98, you actually need to install a couple of updates before you can access the Windows Update site.

At a minimum, you need to install the 128 bit encryption and DUN updates.

I believe that you even need at least IE version 5 if not version 5.5

Use caution installing IE 6 and DirectX updates if the driver for your video card does not support DirectX 9.

Got your message.

For Windows 98, place your install CD in your CD drive.

Exit from the program that starts up.

From the run box on the start menu, run sfc
System File Checker will look for corrupt and missing Windows system files.

You should only need to restore any missing or corrupt files.
However, if a system file is OLDER than the version on the CD, you should replace those also.

Next, go to add / remove programs.
Scroll down to Internet Explorer.
Select the option to repair IE.

If you are still having problems, I recommend a registry cleaner. I prefer Fix-It from V-com.
Norton Win Doctor works well, as does Registry First Aid from Rose City Software.

As to your twain problem, the best option is to reinstall the latest drivers for your scanner / multi-function device.

Replace your memory (RAM) and check it.
