windows explorer problem

I have a user running Win 98 SE with Office 2000. The user likes to open her documents from windows explorer. Word documents open in word, but as if they are new documents or untitled. Example ABC.doc opens as document 1. The files open file fine from word. I’ve tried a restore the OS from a recovery disc thinking it is an explorer issue. Has anyone seen this before?
