Windows explorer shuts down unexpectedly

By Bugboy ·
I have experienced a failure of windows explorer.
When You open explorer from the start button it will open normally but as you scoll down the list it will close when it reaches "Control Panel" icon. If you try to open it using "ctl/e" it won't even open. Has anyone else had this happen? What is the fix or workaround?

Have seen similar behavior caused by malware. Scan for viruses, spyware, and adware using current definition files. If you don't already have software to do so, the following are freeware and effective.

AVG Anti-virus (www.grisoft.com)
Spybot Search and Destroy (www.download.com)
Ad-Aware SE (www.download.com)

The reason can be an background process with injected into the explorer prozess. Review all background process with the Windows task manager or the Security Task Manager (http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager, incl security rating of your running background processes).

I discovered the problem.... It was caused by an older version of Kodak easyshare software... uninstalling the software solved the problem... Unfortunately I discovered the solution while reinstalling the operating system and as soon as I installed the software the problem reappeared.
Oh well, at least it is figured out... htnks for the input!
