Windows explorer shuts down unexpectedly

I have experienced a failure of windows explorer.
When You open explorer from the start button it will open normally but as you scoll down the list it will close when it reaches “Control Panel” icon. If you try to open it using “ctl/e” it won’t even open. Has anyone else had this happen? What is the fix or workaround?
