If this is a Volume License copy of XP the most likely problem is that when SP2 was applied it made the product key invalid this is quite a common thing with every MS SP and now with the Genuine Windows Advantage or whatever they are calling it you could be locked our of the system as Windows is now reporting it as a non-legit copy.

If this is the case you'll need to ring either MS or the computer maker if it's a Dell, HP or the like and get a new product key. If you ring MS and you have a volume License version of XP you'll need the original install CD and be able to read the numbers off the inner ring so MS can issue you a new product key which you'll then need to change so you are back in business.

Now for the BAD news MS takes between 7 - 10 working days to e-mail you a new Product Key.

If this is a recently installed installation and the product has not been activated this is exactly what should be happening to.
